Iraqi

If America and the coalition leave Iraqi would the people then live in peace there?

Short answer - no. There would be an increase in violence, further instability and worse, we would know even less of what was going on. And if the present government collapses it would become a breeding ground for terrorists. Osama must be laughing his **** off at all the anti-war protesters - just what he wants!

I don’t think we have any choice but to stay put in Iraq but can anyone really believe that the answer to resolving terrorism is to create another broken down, war torn state from which terrorism can only breed and prosper amid the hatred, poverty and despair?

Just look at the history of Ireland for your answer. Their religious war, Catholic V Protestant, has been going on since before Q.E first, over 500 years. The main reason it kept going was the presence of “Protestant” English troops. The only thing that will stop it is either a bloodbath following the total withdrawal of all English troops,
or the realisation that there is no one to stop them and keep them apart and they will come to their own settlement. That is what is starting to happen now.

In Iraq it is Sunni V Shiite, with the “Coallition of the willing” trying to keep them apart. If all foreign troops pull out there definitely will be a bloodbath, but they will then realise they are all actually fighting for the same side and peace will follow, they will not be able to use the foreigners as an excuse and barrier between them.
The same thing applies in Israel and Palestine, India and Pakistan, and any number of African countries.

Nope, thats why ousting Saddam was a stupid thing. For all that he was bad, he at least understood that with all the different factions, war lords etc you had to be a harsh ruler. I think he was the lesser evil. Centuries of religious, ethnic & cultural differences are not going to change overnight, if ever. Even when the coalition pull out I believe the only way that any order will be restored to the country is if another tyrant fills Saddams shoes.

grumpyoldman you make an interesting point in the notion that the foreign troops are increasing the unrest between the Sunni’s and Shiites’s…
If these diverse cultures who share the same homelands somehow see that they share interests in some sort of alliance- even a fragile one at this stage, if the US realise this, it is foreign forces absolute responsiblity to step out and establish for support such a possibility.
How concerning it is to then suggest that the US instead support a strategy in which keeping the diverse factions apart serves them the stronger means to hold control of oil supplies.
    Blood for Oil.

Listening to Insight and the loss of Rights to Free Speech in Australia genuinely reflects the lack of morality and integrity in our Federal Government. Everything is about “winning”. America and its cohorts of the “Willing”, believe theirs is the only right way to “believe in a moral standard”. Did you notice, that we Australians have invaded a sovereign country? Not to protect Australia, but because we felt compelled to force Iraqi into our way of thinking.

The Arabs didn’t come here and force us to do anything yet we presume in our arrogance that we have the right to try and enforce our way of life on them.

It isn’t going to work, nor should it be allowed to succeed!

Mary, just to pull you up on one point, when you mention Arabs, some of a certain religion ARE trying to force themselves on us, the latest being that they are now demanding a prayer room at the MCG of all places.

We’re only there to lend a hand, as Peter Garrett used to sing before he became a complete sell-out, joke and hypocrite. (Pete’s only hope is to get the hell out of the ALP and work for organisations with which he is not in basic conflict). Iraq’s a bloody mess and I don’t know what we are doing there - i mean i DO know, obviously sucking up to the US, but I don’t know what we really hope to get out of it. We’ll get a few boys home in a body bag, a dint in the budget, and I can’t see anything else coming from it - can any other Nookers????

Winnierose, it would be funny if it wasn’t true, the Catholics who work there reckon they will demand a statue of Mary in the lunch rooms if a prayer room is supplied to the muslims!
Lets just get the hell out of Iraq and Afghanistan, put a total economic embargo on them and any country that supplies arms to them. (And that includes the Yanks) The only reason the Irish conflict lasted so long was the yank’s, especially the Kennedy and Ford families, pouring money in to supply the catholics with arms.
